Post-UTME Screening Documents: The Complete Checklist

For post-UTME and the physical screening that follows admission, you will usually need your JAMB registration and result slips, your O'level result (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB), proof of age, proof of your state of origin, recent passport photographs, and the receipts and printouts from the school's portal. The exact list varies by school, so read your school's notice and treat this checklist as the starting point.
Gathering these early saves you from the most avoidable way to lose an admission: arriving without a document, or with one that does not match the rest.
Two different screenings
The word "screening" covers two separate stages, and they need different things.
- Post-UTME screening happens before admission. You register on the school's portal and either sit a test or are ranked on your UTME and O'level results. Mostly you upload documents and bring printouts.
- Physical (or documentation) screening happens after you have been offered admission. The school checks your original documents before you can register as a student.
The checklist
JAMB documents
- UTME registration slip.
- UTME result slip (the original result slip printed from JAMB, where the school asks for it).
- JAMB admission letter, for physical screening after you have accepted admission on CAPS.
O'level results
- Your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result, printed from the exam body's result-checking portal, and the certificate if it has been issued.
- If you are combining two sittings, both results. Check first that your school and course allow two sittings.
- Make sure your O'level result has been uploaded to your JAMB profile. Admission cannot be processed on CAPS without it.
Identity and origin
- Birth certificate or sworn declaration of age.
- Certificate of state of origin (sometimes called certificate of indigeneship or LGA identification letter).
- Your National Identification Number (NIN) record.
School portal printouts
- Post-UTME registration form and photo card or acknowledgement slip.
- Payment receipts for the screening fee, acceptance fee and any other charges, printed from the portal.
- Your admission letter from the school itself, which is separate from the JAMB one.
Others
- Recent passport photographs on the background the school asks for. Bring more than you think you need.
- Medical report or fitness form, if the school requires it.
- Letter of attestation or reference, where requested (often from a school principal or a public officer).
- For Direct Entry candidates: your A-level, IJMB, JUPEB, ND or NCE results and certificates.
The mistakes that cost admissions
Most document problems are not missing papers. They are papers that disagree with each other.
- Name mismatches. If your name is spelt differently on JAMB, your O'level result and your birth certificate, sort it out before screening. Changes on JAMB records go through JAMB's own correction process, not the school.
- Wrong state of origin. At federal universities, state of origin affects which admission list you are on, so it is checked. A certificate that contradicts your JAMB record is a serious problem. Our guide to merit, catchment and ELDS explains why.
- Results not yet released or withheld. A result that is still awaiting release or withheld cannot be screened. Follow up with the exam body early.
- Unpaid or unverified receipts. Pay only through the school's official portal and keep the receipt that carries the official reference.
How to organise everything
Keep one clear plastic folder with originals, a second with two photocopies of everything, and scans of each document on your phone and in your email. Name the scans plainly ("WAEC result", "JAMB result slip") so you can upload them in a hurry. When the school's notice comes out, tick its list against your folder the same day.
If you are still waiting for screening dates, our guides on post-UTME screening dates and preparing for post-UTME cover what to do in the meantime.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need for post-UTME registration?
Usually your JAMB registration and result details, O'level result, passport photograph and payment receipt. Your school's notice gives the exact list.
Can I do physical screening with a WAEC result that is awaiting release?
Generally not. Physical screening checks your actual result against the course requirements, so it must be released and uploaded to your JAMB profile.
Is the JAMB admission letter the same as the school's admission letter?
No. The JAMB admission letter is printed from the JAMB portal after you accept on CAPS; the school issues its own letter separately. You will usually need both.
What if my name is different on my documents?
Correct it before screening, through the body that issued each document. Mismatched names are one of the commonest reasons screening stalls.
