Is 200 a Good JAMB Score? What It Gets You in 2026/2027

Yes, 200 is a good JAMB score. It is 50 marks above the national university minimum of 150, and in the 2026/2027 cycle it met the post-UTME eligibility mark at every university on our list, including UNILAG, UI, OAU and UNIBEN. But at those schools, 200 was the line itself. You would be eligible, and also at the very bottom of the eligible pool.
That is the useful way to think about 200: it opens almost every door, but it does not push you far through the busiest ones. Where you apply, and for what course, decides whether it is enough.
Where 200 stood in the 2026/2027 cycle
These are the minimum UTME scores the schools set for first-choice candidates in their 2026/2027 post-UTME notices:
- UNILAG, UI, OAU and UNIBEN: 200, exactly the score in question.
- LASU: 195.
- University of Abuja: 180, plus the programme's own cut-off.
- UNN, OOU and AAUA: 160.
- UNIUYO: 150.
The national minimums for 2026/2027, set at the policy meeting in Abuja on 11 May 2026, were 150 for universities and colleges of nursing and 100 for polytechnics. A school can set its mark above those floors but never below them. For the full picture, see our JAMB cut-off mark 2026/2027 guide and the post-UTME cut-off marks round-up.
Why "exactly on the line" is a weak position at the big schools
An eligibility mark decides who may apply for screening. It is not the score that gets admitted. Every candidate above the line is ranked, usually on an aggregate of UTME and post-UTME, and places are filled from the top.
Now look at the demand. According to figures presented at the 2026 policy meeting, UNILAG was the first choice of 78,240 candidates, OAU of 60,370, UI of 58,895 and UNIBEN of 55,425. A large share of those applicants will have cleared 200. If you sit exactly on 200 at one of these universities, everyone else who cleared the mark is ahead of you or level with you before post-UTME even starts. That is the gap between a minimum and a winning score, which our cut-off marks explainer unpacks.
That does not make 200 hopeless at a big school. It means your post-UTME result has to do a lot of work, and your course choice has to be realistic.
Course choice changes everything
A school's eligibility mark is a general minimum. Popular courses such as Medicine and Surgery, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy and Computer Science end up admitting at much higher scores, because so many strong candidates apply for so few places. Universities often publish the merit cut-off for each course after screening; UNILAG, for instance, releases its UTME merit cut-off marks per course for each session. Last year's figure for your exact course is the best guide to what you are really up against.
With 200, the realistic options at the most-demanded universities are courses with fewer applicants per place. At universities whose eligibility mark was 160 or 180, 200 puts you comfortably inside the pool for a much wider range of courses.
How much can post-UTME move a 200?
More than most candidates expect. Take an illustration: a school that counts UTME as 50% of the aggregate by dividing it by 8. A score of 200 becomes 25 points; a score of 240 becomes 30. A 40-mark JAMB gap is worth 5 aggregate points, which a strong post-UTME can easily make up. The aggregate score guide shows how different schools do the sum.
This is why candidates with 200 should not treat post-UTME as a formality. It is the part of the process where a 200 can overtake a 230.
Three ways to use a 200 well
- Match the school to the score. A university whose eligibility mark sits well below 200 gives you a cushion; one whose mark is exactly 200 gives you none.
- Match the course to the competition. Check how many applicants your course attracts and what it admitted at last year. A related, less crowded course is often the smarter first choice.
- Prepare for post-UTME as a second JAMB. Use past questions, practise under time, and know the format your school uses. The school's past questions are the best place to start.
Is 200 worth rewriting?
Only if your heart is set on a course that 200 cannot reach, such as Medicine at a heavily subscribed federal university. For most courses, 200 is a score to use, not to replace. If you do plan to sit the 2027 UTME, note that the Federal Ministry of Education has proposed a window of 15 to 25 March 2027. That proposal is not yet confirmed, but it is earlier than recent cycles, so plan to start studying now rather than after the holidays.
Frequently asked questions
Can 200 get me into UNILAG?
It met UNILAG's 2026/2027 eligibility mark of 200, so you could apply for screening. Admission then depends on your course and how your aggregate ranks against other applicants.
Is 200 good for Medicine?
Usually not, at the most competitive universities. Medicine is among the most oversubscribed courses, and the scores that are actually admitted tend to be far above the general eligibility mark.
What percentage of candidates score 200 and above?
JAMB has not published an official breakdown for 2026 that we could verify, and fact-checkers have flagged viral figures on this as unsupported. What is confirmed is that 2,243,816 candidates registered for the 2026 UTME.
Is 200 good for a state university?
Generally yes. In 2026/2027, OOU and AAUA set 160 and LASU set 195, so 200 cleared all three.
The candidates who turn a 200 into an admission are usually the ones who walk into post-UTME already used to timed questions. Start practising free on EasyPoint with JAMB and post-UTME past questions under exam timing.
