JAMB Change of Institution or Course After Missing the Cut-Off

If your UTME score is below the eligibility mark of the school you chose, you can ask JAMB to change your institution, your course, or both. The change is made through JAMB, not the university, and it moves your application to a school or course whose cut-off your score can actually meet.
Done well, it rescues the year. Done carelessly, it moves you from one school that will not admit you to another that will not either. This guide covers how it works and, more importantly, how to choose.
Why a change is sometimes the only route
Most universities only screen candidates who chose them as first choice and met their published eligibility mark. In the 2026/2027 cycle, UNILAG, UI, OAU and UNIBEN set 200, LASU set 195, and the University of Abuja set 180. A candidate with 185 who chose UNILAG cannot apply for UNILAG's screening at all, however strong their O'level results. The application is stuck unless the first choice changes.
The same logic applies to courses. If your score clears the school's general mark but your course admits only far higher scores, changing to a related course at the same school can be a better move than changing schools. Our cut-off marks explainer sets out how school-wide and course-level marks differ.
How the change is done
In 2026, JAMB announced on 15 May, through its spokesperson Fabian Benjamin, that eligible 2026 UTME candidates could change their course or institution by visiting any of the Board's approved CBT centres. The centre verifies you, makes the change on your JAMB profile, and takes the official fee. Keep the printed confirmation the centre gives you.
Three rules protect you:
- Only use JAMB-accredited CBT centres. Not a cyber café that "knows someone", not an agent, not a stranger on WhatsApp.
- Pay only the official fee. Ask what JAMB charges before you start, and refuse any extra "processing" charge.
- Check your profile afterwards. Log in to the JAMB e-Facility portal and confirm the new choice appears correctly before you pay for any post-UTME form.
JAMB opens and closes this window by announcement, and the dates move from year to year. Watch jamb.gov.ng and JAMB's official social media accounts rather than relying on what a friend heard.
How to choose the new school: the part people get wrong
The common mistake is to change on impulse, to whichever school a classmate mentions, without checking its numbers. Before you change, confirm four things:
- Its eligibility mark. Your score must meet the school's published post-UTME minimum, ideally with a margin. Our post-UTME cut-off marks round-up shows the range: from 150 at UNIUYO to 200 at the most-demanded federal universities.
- Its screening window. If the school has already closed its post-UTME registration, changing to it now may leave you with nothing to apply for this year.
- The course and your subjects. The school must offer the course, and your four UTME subjects must match what that course requires there. A mismatch makes you ineligible even with a good score. Check against the subject combinations guide.
- Your O'level results. Your credits must cover the course's required subjects at the new school, which are not always identical to the old one.
When a school changes your course for you
Sometimes the university does the moving. If you narrowly miss your chosen course but qualify for another, a school may offer you an alternative course. That offer appears on your CAPS dashboard for you to accept or reject; it is not automatic. Read it carefully, because accepting it is accepting admission into that course. Our guide on accepting admission on JAMB CAPS explains what each status means.
Changing institution type
A change can also move you between institution types. If your score is below a university's eligibility mark, a polytechnic is a realistic option: the national minimum for polytechnics in 2026/2027 is 100. And candidates for NCE programmes at colleges of education no longer need a UTME score at all from the 2026/2027 cycle, although they still register with JAMB and are admitted through CAPS.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my institution after writing post-UTME?
You can request a change while JAMB's window is open, but your post-UTME at the old school does not transfer. The new school will need its own screening, so check that it is still accepting applications.
Can I change my course without changing my school?
Yes. You can change the course only, the institution only, or both, as long as your subjects and O'level results fit the new choice.
Where do I do the change of institution?
For 2026 candidates, JAMB directed changes to its approved CBT centres. Always confirm the current procedure on jamb.gov.ng before going.
Will changing my institution affect my JAMB score?
No. Your UTME score stays the same; only your choice of institution or course changes.
