Admission Scams in Nigeria: How to Spot a Fake Admission Offer

No one can sell you admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college. Every genuine admission is processed through JAMB's Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), and JAMB has said that admission outside CAPS is illegal and will not be recognised. If someone asks you for money to "secure", "fast-track" or "guarantee" a place, you are being scammed.
Admission scams work because the process is stressful and the waiting is long. Knowing how they operate takes away most of their power.
How admission scams usually work
- The "guaranteed slot". Someone claims to work in the admissions office, or to know a lecturer, and offers to get you in for a fee. They often target candidates just below a school's cut-off.
- The fake admission list. A list with your name on it is shared on WhatsApp or a website that looks official. The fee comes later: an "acceptance fee" paid into a personal account.
- The cloned portal. A website copying a university's design, on a slightly different address, collecting "screening fees" and personal details.
- The upgrade. An offer to "upgrade" your JAMB score or change your course on CAPS for money. JAMB scores cannot be bought, and changes to your JAMB record only go through JAMB's own channels.
- The "lost slot" panic. A message saying your admission will be cancelled unless you pay within hours.
The warning signs
- Payment into a personal bank account. Schools collect fees through their official portals, with a receipt and reference number. A personal account is a red flag every time.
- A promise of certainty. Real admission is competitive and never guaranteed in advance. Anyone who promises it is lying.
- Urgency. Pressure to pay "today" is designed to stop you checking.
- An unofficial web address. Look closely at the domain. Universities use their own official domains, usually ending in .edu.ng.
- Nothing on CAPS. If the offer does not appear on your CAPS dashboard, it is not an admission.
How to verify any admission offer
There is one check that settles it. Log in to the JAMB e-Facility portal, open Check Admission Status, and go to CAPS. A real offer from a real school appears there, for you to accept or reject. If it is not on CAPS, it is not real, whatever the letter or list says. Our step-by-step guide to accepting admission on JAMB CAPS shows each screen.
Then cross-check with the school itself: its official website, its official portal and its verified social media accounts. If a "list" is circulating, find it on the school's own site. Our guide to checking your admission status covers both places.
Fees: what is legitimate
Genuine admission involves real fees: a post-UTME or screening fee, an acceptance fee after admission, and school fees. The difference is how they are paid. Legitimate fees are paid through the school's official portal or the payment channel it names, generate an official receipt, and come after a CAPS offer, not before. A request to pay an acceptance fee before you have an offer on CAPS is a warning sign in itself.
Why scammers target candidates below the cut-off
A candidate who has just missed a school's eligibility mark is anxious and has few obvious options. That is exactly who an agent promising a "back door" is looking for. The honest options are slower but real: changing to a school or course whose cut-off you meet through JAMB's official process, a polytechnic, Direct Entry, or a stronger UTME next year. See changing institution or course after missing the cut-off.
If you have already paid
Stop paying, however much more is demanded to "release" the admission. Keep every message, receipt and account number. Report it to your bank immediately and ask about recovering the transfer, report it to the school's admissions office, and report it to the police. Warn your friends; scammers often work through the same group chats.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone help me get admission for money?
No. Admission is processed only through CAPS. Anyone selling admission is either a scammer or offering something illegal that will not be recognised.
How do I know if my admission is real?
Check CAPS on the JAMB e-Facility portal. A genuine offer appears there for you to accept.
Is it safe to pay acceptance fees online?
Yes, through the school's official portal after you have accepted the offer on CAPS. Never into a personal account.
Are admission lists on WhatsApp real?
Sometimes they are copies of real lists, sometimes forgeries. Confirm on the school's official site and on CAPS before you act on one.
