JAMB Minimum Age: The Under-16 Rule Explained

The minimum age for admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college of education is 16. At the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held in Abuja on 11 May 2026, that minimum was retained. Candidates who are younger, measured as at 30 September 2026 for this cycle, are only considered under an "exceptional" category, after strict screening.

In practice, that means an underage candidate can sit the UTME, but should not assume they can be admitted this year on the strength of a good score alone.

How the age is measured

Your age is calculated from the date of birth on your JAMB record, against a cut-off date set for the admission year. For the 2026/2027 cycle, that date was 30 September 2026. A candidate who turns 16 on or before that date meets the requirement; one who turns 16 afterwards counts as underage for this cycle.

The date of birth on your JAMB profile must match your birth certificate or declaration of age. Get it right at registration, because correcting personal data later goes through JAMB's own process and is not always quick.

What the "exceptional" category means

The exceptional category exists for candidates who are younger than 16 but show exceptional ability. Being placed in it is not the same as being admitted: candidates in this group go through stricter screening, and only those who meet the higher standard are considered.

JAMB handles these candidates separately, which is why their results can come out at a different time. In 2026, results for underage candidates who sat the UTME were released around 5 September, months after most candidates had theirs.

Should you sit the UTME if you are under 16?

It depends on what you want from it. Sitting early has some real benefits:

  • Experience. You learn the CBT format, the timing and the pressure without your admission depending on it.
  • A benchmark. A real score tells you exactly how far you are from where you need to be.
  • A small chance of exceptional admission, if your score and screening are outstanding.

The costs are the registration fee and the risk of treating an exam you cannot use as a disappointment. If you sit it under 16, sit it as practice, and plan seriously for the following year.

Parents often worry that a year's wait is a year lost. It rarely is. A candidate who enters university at 16 or 17 with a strong score, a well-chosen course and solid O'level results is better placed than one admitted early into a course they did not really choose.

A sensible plan for an underage candidate

  1. Finish your O'levels well. Your WAEC or NECO results matter whatever your age, and five credits in the right subjects, including English and Mathematics, are required for almost every course.
  2. Use the extra year. A year of focused study before the UTME you can actually use is an advantage, not a delay. See how to study for JAMB in three months for a structure you can stretch.
  3. Choose your course carefully. The extra time is a chance to choose well. Our guide on choosing a course you will not regret helps.
  4. Aim above the cut-off. Plan for the score your course and school actually admit at, not the national minimum of 150. Our cut-off marks explainer explains the difference.

What about 2027?

The minimum age is reviewed at each year's policy meeting, together with the cut-off marks. It has stayed at 16, but check the decisions of the 2027 meeting when they are announced. Note too that the Federal Ministry of Education has proposed holding the 2027 UTME between 15 and 25 March 2027. That is a proposal, not a confirmed date, but it means less time to prepare than in recent years.
